Books
I’ve done my best to divide these into the process categories we’ve worked through so that you can find what you need for any areas you’re struggling with, or wish to delve further into.
COURTING FLOW / EXPLORE
I put these two sections together even though they aren’t next to each other on our mind-map because these two stages of our process are often very much in conversation with each other.
Poemcrazy: Freeing Your Life with Words (Susan Goldsmith Wooldridge): So much delicious word play in here! Great for either courting flow or exploring. I love dipping into this.
The Pen and the Bell: Mindful Writing in a Busy World (Brenda Miller & Holly J. Hughes): These reflections and the accompanying exercises (split up into mindfulness or writing exercises) are WONDERFUL. I recommend this book all the time. It’s a real little-known gem you’ll return to again and again.
ORIENT
For recommendations here, see the Process Archetypes PDF, where I share specific craft titles that support how you orient in story.
ANCHOR
Burnout (Nagoski & Nagoski); If you’re struggling with overwhelm and burnout, this is the book for you. It teaches you how to break the stress cycle and bring a mindful approach to what shifts are needed to give you some good mental hygiene. This book is a GAME CHANGER. If you find yourself exhausted, struggling with boundaries, and beset by fear, inner doubt, comparison, the Inner Critic and all that jazz…read this ASAP. (And please, for the love, actually do the exercises!)
The Practice (Seth Godin): Godin gives you a good kick in the pants about being dedicated to your practice. It’s a tough love talk, but an enjoyable one. If you need some of that energy, this will do you fine. It’s broken up into nice bite-sized chunks too.
The Artist’s Way (Julia Cameron): A classic. This book really helped me when I needed to claim ownership of having a writing practice at all. The Morning Pages are an invaluable tool, and the whole thing is very healing and playful and delicious.
PREP
Atomic Habits (James Clear): If you’re struggling with getting to the writer’s seat in the first place, this is the book for you! Not just another productivity hustle book. This is the real deal.
The Practice (Seth Godin): Also relevant for ANCHOR! Godin gives you a good kick in the pants about being dedicated to your practice. It’s a tough love talk, but an enjoyable one. If you need some of that energy, this will do you fine. It’s broken up into nice bite-sized chunks too.
Mindfulness & Meditation
As a You Have A Process writer, you now have lifetime access to my private mindfulness portal, which I update on the regular. (Please do not share this with anyone - it’s for your beautiful eyes only! Public access to my meditations can be found on Insight Timer).
Here, you can get downloads of guided meditations, mindfulness resources, and a posture clinic.
May it be of benefit!
