First, a big thank you to Kathlene Brown, who volunteered to let me do this dialogue in a public workshop, with no preparation whatsoever. I wanted to create the conditions that are present when I do this with my 1:1 writers. It’s so inspiring to hear about her process and, even more, to hear her discover that she has one!

What’s specifically useful is listening to the way I press through my questioning to get more and more specific, more and more granular in that conversation and how only once we commit to digging deeper we begin to realize all the great ways we enter story and get flowing and unstuck. I also think it's so inspiring to hear somebody have an series of Aha! Moments about their process in real time. This was not something that this writer and I rehearsed or talked about, I just asked for a volunteer and she said yes, and we just did it.
