ABOUT THE COURSE
We've all been there: Characters we stay up with until the wee hours because we can't get enough of them. We miss our subway stops for them. We daydream about them on our commutes and write fanfic about them in our heads while riding elevators, shopping for groceries, and working out. (Scratch that last one - we don't need to exercise because these characters raise our heart rate just fine, thankyouverymuch).
In this course, we'll be looking at the elements of the binge-worthy character: What makes them so delicious? WHY DO WE SHIP THEM SO HARD? Most importantly, how can we make our own characters just as addictive? We'll go over the basics of constructing your own bingeable characters and how to put the whole cast together to create stories worthy of all-night read-a-thons: protagonists, love-interests, villains, secondary characters (aka sidekicks and hype crews). This six-week course has you covered and will get your readers burning the midnight oil in no time.
This course is a blast and you will walk away with SO MUCH.
For starters?
My no-fail way to write a bingeable chapter.
BY THE END OF THIS COURSE, YOU'LL…
Have a good sense of what makes a book and its characters bingeable to YOU and your readership.
Have strategies and tools for enhancing your characters and their relationships to one another in order to up your binge factor.
Learn how to plot through character in order to write bingeable stories for your characters to live and breathe in.
Discover how to revise your characters in order to bring out their binge if they need a bit of shine.
Walk away with a clear understanding of how stakes and character desire are the key to an addictive read.
In addition to our other assignments, we'll be breaking down Casey McQuiston's super binge-worthy read, Red, White, and Royal Blue, to see how binge-worthy characters make the WHOLE book bingeable. We'll also look at selections from other binge-worthy books - as well as working on our own stories - to get to the heart of your soon-to-be unforgettable characters.
Expect big revelations, lots of fun, and a process for creating bingeable characters for your WIP and future books.
WHAT YOU GET
Six weeks of curated lectures, worksheets, writing exercises and more sent twice-weekly to your inbox for six weeks. The writing exercises build on themselves to form a super-bingeable scene or chapter.
Instructor support via email
Each week I’ll be hosting a live Q+A for one hour on Thursdays (6:00 pm EST). Questions can be submitted ahead of time for those who can’t make it, and I’ll send out a recording every Friday, along with some encouragement for the weekend. I will be on hand throughout the course to answer questions, provide additional resources, and help you make your characters are bingeable as possible.
WILL YOU READ MY WRITING?
For this course, I will read everyone’s bingeable first line - we’re going to be doing an intense and super fun First Line Workout, one of my absolute favorite activities.
ADD-ON CRAFT COUNSELING ASSESSMENT
If you want me to read the bingeable scene you created in the course - up to 10 pages - there’s always the option to add that on to your tuition before, during, or after the course.
This includes track changes on your pages and a detailed craft counseling assessment where I look at your binge factors, area for improvement, strengths, and next steps, as well as provide additional resources curated to your needs.
You’ll get all the course materials via email and receive online support from yours truly, as needed. What this means is that twice a week, you’ll receive an email from me for the six weeks and can also email me any time with questions.
On Mondays, you’ll receive your assignments and audio lecture for the week.
On Fridays, you’ll receive additional materials, such as a bonus worksheet, the recorded Q+A from the community Zoom, and maybe a little bit of extra reading.
**** The Q+A is totally optional. If you’re sick of Zoom, I get it! Pass on the Q+A and just read my roundup thoughts on Friday.
Here's what a few people have to say about your instructor's ability to get you to binge…
P.S. Not a brag fest - I just want you to know there’s proof in this here pudding!
