For years, (and I mean years!) I struggled with trying to fix a section of my novel that I knew didn’t work, but I didn’t know what to do to get it where it needed to be. The process made me feel as if I were treading water in a quicksand-filled swamp. I’d slog through revisions just to end up with a slightly better version than what had been there before, but one that still didn’t work. When an agent provided feedback in line with my own observations, and invited me to resubmit if I revised, I knew it was time to solicit outside help.
When I saw Heather interviewed on Evelyn Skye’s Creative, Inspired, Happy podcast, I had a strong intuitive sense that she would be the “Book Doula” I needed to transform my work. As it turned out, she was that and so much more!
Working with Heather was amazing on so many levels. She was clear as to costs, deadlines and deliverables, and went the extra mile to coordinate her schedule with mine. But where the real magic happened was in the pages of Heather’s insightful critique—she was able to quickly identify the issue in a way that no other reader or professional had been able to before. Through Heather’s masterful review, and her direct—but compassionate—feedback, she gave me the courage to make a bold change that has allowed the book to become what it always aspired to be.
Heather is more than an editor—she is someone who understands the emotional underpinnings of a novel, its characters, and perhaps more importantly, the writer trying to give her story flight. You couldn’t ask for a better editor, thought partner or coach, and I will be forever grateful to Heather for helping me transform my writing and my work.
